JEE Main Only or Main + Advanced: Which Should You Prepare For?
· Aayam IIT-JEE faculty
This is one of the first questions families ask when a student joins Class 11 for engineering entrance. The answer depends on which colleges you are aiming for and how much time you can give to preparation.
How the two exams are connected
JEE Main is the first exam. Its score is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded institutes and many state engineering colleges, including colleges in Madhya Pradesh. JEE Main also decides who can sit JEE Advanced: only the top performers in JEE Main qualify. JEE Advanced is the exam for admission to the IITs.
How they differ
- JEE Main is computer-based and rewards speed and accuracy across a wide syllabus.
- JEE Advanced has two papers and tests depth: multi-concept problems, varied question types and longer reasoning.
- Preparing for Advanced makes Main easier; preparing only for Main does not prepare you for Advanced.
Choose Main + Advanced if…
- You want an IIT seat and are ready to give extra hours to problem-solving.
- You enjoy Maths and Physics problems that take time to crack.
- You are starting in Class 11 and have two years.
Choose JEE Main if…
- Your goal is an NIT, IIIT or a good state college.
- You are balancing JEE with demanding board preparation.
- You are starting late and want to focus on one exam.
You can change later
Many students start with Main + Advanced in Class 11 and decide after a year of tests. Your test scores in the first two terms are the best guide; talk to your faculty before switching.
